Bulldogs defeat Cougars in Class 3A, District 8 opener

WHITESBURG — Lawrence County defeated Letcher County Central 57-47 in its Class 3A, District 8 opener on Friday, Sept. 26.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-1 overall after notching the win.

Lawrence County carried a lead out of each quarter, doubling up Letcher County Central 14-7 in the first period.

The Bulldogs led 35-28 at halftime.

Maintaining a lead after the break, Lawrence County led 42-35 at the end of the third quarter.

Quarterback Luke Fetherolf led Lawrence County to the win. Through the air, Fetherolf completed seven passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Fetherolf rushed 12 times for 116 yards and one touchdown.

Lawrence County excelled on the ground, rushing 54 times for 466 yards and six touchdowns. Cavin Williams paced Lawrence County on the ground, rushing 18 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns.

Following Williams on the ground in Lawrence County’s offensive attack, Kaden Johnson rushed eight times for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Chipping in on the ground for Lawrence County, Carlo Chicko rushed eight times for 38 yards and one touchdown.

Gray Derifield paced the Bulldogs in receiving. Derifield reeled in a pair of receptions for 68 yards and two touchdowns.

Brayden Queen paced Lawrence County on special teams, making each of his seven extra point kick attempts.

Defensively for Lawrence County, Chandler Preece recorded a team-high 11 tackles while Cameron Castle tallied 10 tackles.

Following Castle in the key defensive category, Chicko posted nine tackles for the Bulldogs.  

Delivering in Lawrence County’s secondary, Derifield recorded an interception.

Lawrence County is scheduled to host Mason County for a non-district game on Friday, Oct. 3.
