Bulldogs come up short at Belfry

BELFRY — Lawrence County battled back to pull even but couldn't outlast Belfry as the Pirates held on to win 21-14 in the second round of the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 12.

The loss eliminated Lawrence County from the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs. Lawrence County exited the 2021 high school football season 8-4.

Senior running back Isaac Dixon led the Pirates, rushing 16 times for 142 yards and one touchdown.

Behind Dixon on the ground for Belfry, Braxton Hatfield rushed six times for 40 yards and one touchdown.

Through the air for the Pirates, quarterback Caden Woolum completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Varney.

Belfry moved ahead early, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. The Pirates led 14-0 at the conclusion of the opening quarter and carried the same lead into halftime.

But Lawrence County battled back, scoring once in the third quarter when Alex Strickland connected with Nick Collinsworth on a 27-yard scoring pass.

The Bulldogs pulled even in the fourth quarter when Dylan Ferguson scored on a five-yard run.

Still, Belfry wouldn't be denied the win, answering with the game-winning touchdown with 5:54 remaining in the game.

Blue Fletcher led the Bulldogs on the ground, rushing 12 times for 68 yards. Behind Fletcher, Douglas Hall rushed nine times for 40 yards. Also delivering on the ground for Lawrence County, Ferguson rushed eight times for 31 yards and the TD.

Belfry is scheduled to visit Bell County in the third round of the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 19.
