PAINTSVILLE — Paintsville separated itself in the first half on the way to beating visiting Betsy Layne 64-22 in the opening round of the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs at Memorial Field on Friday, Nov. 5.
The Tigers improved to 6-5 after posting the win.
Running back Harris Phelps led Paintsville to the win, rushing 16 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
Following Phelps, Zach Taylor rushed three times for 58 yards and two touchdowns in the Tigers' win.
Chipping in on the ground for Paintsville, Blayden Sexton rushed five times for 27 yards and one touchdown.
Quarterback AJ James paced Paintsville through the air, completing seven of 10 passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns.
Taylor was James' top target, hauling in three receptions for 57 yards,
Chipping in through the air for Paintsville, Austin Allen and Bryce McDonald reeled in one touchdown pass reception apiece.
Allen led the Tigers defensively, recording 12 tackles and returning two interceptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
Second to Allen in a key defensive category for reigning Class 1A state champion Paintsville, Cain Grim made 11 tackles.
Paintsville scheduled to visit rival Raceland in the second round of the KHSAA Class 1A Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 12.
