Bulldogs capture 58th District championship

PRESTONSBURG — Lawrence County shut out Floyd Central 10-0 in five innings in the 58th District Baseball Tournament title game at Prestonsburg on Wednesday, May 21.

Remaining on top, Lawrence County repeated as 58th District baseball champion.

Boedy Maynard pitched a six-hit shutout for Lawrence County and earned the win on the mound. Maynard recorded five strikeouts.

Logan Moore started on the mound for Floyd Central and suffered the loss. Moore pitched four innings and recorded three strikeouts.

Following Moore, Landon Prater and Jace Martin each pitched in relief for the Jaguars.

Lawrence County, under the direction of Coach Travis Feltner, scored 10 runs on 14 hits. Maynard (one hit), Eli Fletcher (three hits, two RBIs), Gray Derifield (three hits, one RBI), Logan Whisenant (two hits, two RBIs), Cameron Perkins (two hits), Colin Howard (one hit, two RBIs), Brady Caudill (one hit) and CJ Whitt (one hit) produced at the plate in Lawrence County’s shutout win. Fletcher, Whisenant and Howard each doubled for the Bulldogs.  

Moore (one hit), Martin (one hit), Brance Pennington (one hit), Kolten Crum (one hit), Barrett Williams (one hit) and Grant Jenkins (one hit) each chipped in offensively for the Jaguars. Providing an extra-base hit for Floyd Central, Williams doubled.

Both Lawrence County and Floyd Central advanced to the 15th Region Baseball Tournament.

Fletcher named 58th District Player of the Year: Lawrence County senior Eli Fletcher was named the 58th District Baseball Player of the Year.

Gray Derifield, Tyger Cavins, Colin Howard, Boedy Maynard, Cameron Perkins and Logan Whisenant accompanied Fletcher on the All-58th District Baseball Team. 

Andrew Mortimer
