Bulldogs capture 15th Region title

BUCKLEY CREEK — The Bulldogs are back on top in the 15th Region.

Lawrence County defeated Martin County 97-84 in the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament title game at Pike County Central on Tuesday, March 11.

Head coach Chandler Thompson guided Lawrence County to the 15th Region boys’ basketball title.

Following the win, Lawrence County (23-10) advances to the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16 State Basketball Tournament.

Lawrence County took a lead out of each quarter, outscoring Martin County 26-22 in the opening period.

The Bulldogs were out in front 47-32 at halftime.

Remaining in control after the intermission period, Lawrence County exited the third quarter ahead 75-58.

Lawrence County shot 45.8 percent (33-of-72) from the field. The Bulldogs shot 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from three-point range.

Lawrence County shot 87.5 percent (21-of-24) from the free throw line.

Strong outside and inside, Lawrence County outrebounded Martin County 43-37.

Hayden Perry led Lawrence County to the win. Perry recorded a double-double for the Bulldogs, scoring 24 points and claiming a game-high 14 rebounds.

Four different players reached double figures in scoring for the Bulldogs. Joining Perry in double figures for Lawrence County, Kaiden Harris scored 23 points, Gunnar Woods netted 20 points and Kaden Johnson posted 18 points.

As part of a stellar offensive performance, Caden Muncy (seven points), Braxton Davis (three points) and Luke Fetherolf (two points) provided the rest of Lawrence County’s scoring.

Martin County shot 39.7 percent (29-of-73) from the field. The Cardinals shot 29.3 percent (12-of-41) from three-point range.

Martin County shot 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the free throw line.

Parker Watts scored a game-high 29 points and hauled in 11 rebounds for the Cardinals.

Second to Watts in Martin County’s scoring column, Peyton Davis netted 23 points.

Both Watts and Devan Maynard supplied a double-double for the Cardinals. Maynard scored 12 points and tallied team-high 13 rebounds for 57th District Champion Martin County.

The other scorers for Martin County were Bryson Dials (eight points), Brayden Estep (seven points), Eli Mills (three points) and Aiden Copeland (two points).
