Lawrence County knocks off Pikeville

BUCKLEY CREEK — Lawrence County pulled away to defeat Pikeville 65-40 in the semifinals of the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament at Pike County Central on Thursday, March 6.

After posting the win, Lawrence County advanced to the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament title game.

Lawrence Country shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs shot 35.7 percent (five-of-14) from three-point range.

Lawrence County shot 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the free throw line.

Productive inside, Lawrence County outrebounded Pikeville 34-30.

Freshman Jada Patton led Lawrence County to the win, scoring a game-high 33 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

Joining her teammate in double figures for Lawrence County, 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year Sophie Adkins netted 24 points.

Four players accounted for all of Lawrence County’s scoring. Gracie Woods contributed five points for Lawrence County while Maddison Artrip added three points.

Patton and Emalynn Kitts paced Lawrence County inside, claiming eight rebounds apiece.

Pikeville shot 25 percent (16-of-64) from the field. The Lady Panthers made five of 26 three-point field goal attempts.

Pikeville shot 75 percent (three-of-four) from the free throw line.

Catharine Walters scored a team-high 13 points for the Lady Panthers. Finishing directly behind Walters in Pikeville’s scoring column, Kylie Alvin netted 12 points.

The other scorers for Pikeville in the region tournament game were Leighan Jackson (six points), Nicole Lin (five points), Isabella Mulkey (two points) and Sophie Woods (two points).
