Bulldogs beat Belfry in 2A, Section 8 first round

EASTERN — Lawrence County beat Belfry 72-61 in the 2A, Section 8 Tournament at Floyd Central High School on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

After notching the win, Lawrence County improved to 9-4 and advanced to the 2A, Section 8 semifinals.

Three Lawrence County players reached double figures in scoring.

Andrew Bloomfield scored 22 points to lead Lawrence County to the win.

Finishing directly behind Bloomfield in scoring for the Bulldogs, Logan Ratliff, who hit five three-point field goals, netted 21 points for the Bulldogs.

Joining Bloomfield and Ratliff in double figures for Lawrence County, Blake Marcum added 12 points.

Several players contributed offensively for Lawrence County, including additional scorers Will Lafferty (seven points), Hayden Perry (six points) and Ford Scaggs (four points).

Lawrence County sank seven three-point field goals.

The Bulldogs finished 13-of-29 from the free throw line.

Jonathan Banks led Belfry with a double-double, scoring 21 points and pulling down a game-high 22 rebounds.

Joining Banks in double figures for Belfry, Caden Woolum scored 16 points and Noah Brown netted 11 points.

Along with the three scorers in double figures, Belfry’s offensive effort included Cody Erwin (seven points), Chase Varney (four points) and Eric Daniels (two points).

Belfry shot 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the free throw line.

Former district rivals, Lawrence County and Belfry met for the first time in the 2022-23 boys’ high school basketball season.
