BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference (MEC) has released its Winter/Spring All-MEC Academic Teams and Commissioner's Honor Roll. Among the honorees is Weslt Virginia Wesleyan College softball standout Ciana Bowen, a pitcher/first baseman from Louisa.
A Lawrence County High School graduate, Bowen has been named to the MEC Commissioner's Honor Roll. Leading the way with 142 total student-athletes recognized was West Virginia Wesleyan College. The Bobcats also led the MEC in academic honorees in the Fall semester. The individual sports eligible for the Winter/Spring honors were Acrobatics and Tumbling, Baseball, Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Swimming, Men's and Women's Tennis, Men's and Women's Track & Field, Softball, and Women's Lacrosse. Due to the extenuating circumstances that COVID-19 placed on grading policies of member institutions, the MEC has used Fall semester GPA's for the Winter/Spring All-MEC Academic Teams and Commissioner's Honor Roll. Student-athletes must maintain a semester GPA at or above 3.70 in order to make an All-MEC Academic Team. WVWC produced 68 student-athletes this Winter/Spring named to an All-MEC Academic Team, and Men's Tennis and Softball led the way with nine each. Student-athletes who finish with a GPA from 3.25-3.69 qualify for Commissioner's Honor Roll, and 74 'Cats grabbed that distinction this semester. The WVWC Women's Track & Field had the most student-athletes honored by the MEC with twenty-one, followed by Softball with seventeen. The MEC honored a record 1,016 student-athletes this semester, including 474 on the All-MEC Academic Teams.
