BELFRY - Belfry held on to edge visiting Lawrence County 56-53 in a girls' high school basketball game on Monday Jan. 25.
Lawrence County slipped into the loss column after claiming four straight wins
Determined Belfry won despite shooting 30.3 percent (20-of-66) from the field. The Lady Pirates were 1-of-21 from 3-point range.
Belfry shot 68.2 percent (15-of-22) from the free throw line.
Freshman guard Kyera Thornsbury scored a game-high 29 points to lead Belfry to the win. Thornsbury was 8-of-10 fro the free throw line.
Accompanying Thornsbury in double figures in scoring for Belfry, Cushi Fletcher finished with 13 points.
Belfry is one of the most improved girls' basketball teams in the 15th Region.
Lawrence County shot 46.2 percent (18-of-39) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs were 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) from 3-point range.
Lawrence County shot 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the free throw line.
Kensley Feltner, who is among the top sophomore girls' high school basketball players in the state, led Lawrence County with a double-double, scoring 25 points and claiming 16 rebounds.
Feltner was the only Lawrence County player to reach double figures in scoring.
Nearly reaching double figures, Brooke Neal netted nine points for Lawrence County in the loss.
Lawrence County and Belfry are former district rivals.
