Belfry edges Lawrence County

LOUISA — Belfry edged Lawrence County 60-59 in a girls’ high school basketball season opener on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Familiar 15th Region rivals, Belfry and Lawrence County swapped leads throughout the season opener.
Belfry shot 42.6 percent (20-of-47) from the field. The Lady Pirates shot 30 percent (three-of-10) from three-point range.
Belfry shot 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the free throw line.
Controlling the backboards, Belfry outrebounded Lawrence County 50-18.
Lexi Mapes led Belfry to the win. Mapes recorded a double-double, finishing with 15 points and a game-high 20 rebounds.
Accompanying Mapes in double figures for Belfry, Kiera Woolum netted 13 points.
Nearly recaching double figures for Belfry, Kaylor Thornsbury scored nine points while Emma Dixon and Kami Dillon netted eight points apiece.
Rounding out Belfry’s individual scoring, Macee Lester added five points and Lillie McCoy chipped in two points.
Lawrence County shot 34.4 percent (21-of-61) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs made only three of 23 three-point field goal attempts.
Lawrence County shot 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line.
Jada Patton scored a game-high 27 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Patton connected on 10 of 16 two-point field goal attempts.
Caroline See joined Patton in double figures for Lawrence County, scoring 17 points.
Five players accounted for all of Lawrence County’s scoring. Gracie Woods (seven points), Jenna Murphy (six points) and Maddison Artrip (two points) also contributed offensively for the Lady Bulldogs.
