LOUISA — A winter storm watch is in effect in the Big Sandy region through Friday morning.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the watch from 1 a.m. today (Wednesday) through Friday morning.

The NWS in Charleston, W.Va., said “heavy mixed precipitation” is possible for its coverage area, which includes Lawrence County.

“Total snow accumulations of over 3 inches and ice accumulations of around quarter of an inch possible,” the Charleston NWS said, adding that road travel “could be very difficult” and “could impact the morning or evening commute.”

The NWS in Jackson also issued a winter storm watch for its coverage area, which includes Johnson, Floyd and Martin counties, with total snow accumulations of up to 2 inches and ice accumulations of one tenth to one half of an inch possible.

“Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice,” the Jackson NWS said. “Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.”
