BLACKLOG — A Hardy man was arrested in Martin County Tuesday, Nov. 1, after attempting to elude law enforcement.

Gary Jude, 30, is charged with first-degree fleeing or evading in a motor vehicle, second-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance and first-degree possession of opiates.

Martin County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Kidd said in the report that a call came in to dispatch of a reckless driver on Rt. 3. A vehicle matching the description passed Kidd and ran through the stop sign at the intersection of Rt. 645 and Rt. 3 at a high rate of speed, the report said.

Kidd said his emergency equipment was activated, and Jude was driving in excess of 74 miles per hour and then ran a stoplight at Rt. 645. Jude was pursued up Blacklog Road and was seen passing vehicles across a double yellow line, the report said.

Jude turned onto Mac Pinson Drive and crashed into block in a ditch, the report said. Jude stated he swallowed fentanyl and that was why he ran, the report said.

During a post-arrest search, Kidd said in the report that they found 2 ½ suboxone in a blue can with a syringe and needle. Jude stated he “shot up the suboxone” before he drove, according to the report.

NetCare Ambulance Service administered 4 mg of Narcan to Jude and medically cleared him, the report said.

Jude refused a blood test and was transported to booking before he was transported on to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Johnson County.
