LOUISA — Lawrence County High School was on lockdown Thursday following a report of a man carrying what appeared to be a weapon.
Lawrence County Superintendent Dr. Robbie Fletcher said in a release that at approximately 7:50 a.m. Thursday, school officials were contacted by local police officers to enter into a lockdown due to a report of a man carrying what appeared to be a large rifle down Lick Creek Road, which runs from the intersection near Dollar General to Louisa Middle School and approximately parallel to Rt. 2565.
Within minutes, another local police officer apprehended the person, the release said, and it was determined that the gun was an air rifle pellet gun and that the person was walking to a family member’s home.
Fletcher said after the police officer determined there was no threat to the students, the lockdown was lifted.
“Safety is our first priority,” Fletcher said.” When police officials contact us of a potentially dangerous situation, we follow police officials’ directions immediately. Thankfully, local authorities responded quickly. The situation was assessed, and it was determined that we could move about our normal day within minutes. As Superintendent and a parent, I appreciate the quick response of our local authorities to ensure the safety of our kids.”
