Area middle school students advance to state Governor’s Cup

Johnson County Middle School won its 26th consecutive Region 21 Governor’s Cup competition last weekend.

PAINTSVILLE – Regional Governor’s Cup competitions were held last weekend for middle school students, with several academic team members advancing to the state finals.

Johnson County Middle School won its 26th consecutive Region 21 title, while its quick recall and future problem-solving teams took first place and three JCMS students won individual competitions.

JCMS took the Region 21 championship with 54 points, while James D. Adams Middle School was second with 25. Johns Creek School was third with 11.5 points, Pikeville High School was fourth with nine points and Martin County Middle School placed fifth with 5.5 points.

Two Lawrence County schools fared well in Region 17, with Fallsburg Elementary and Blaine Elementary taking second and third place, respectively, in future problem solving.

The top three team finishers and the top five individual finishers advance to the state Governor’s Cup competition, which will be in March.

Results for Region 21 are as follows:

Quick Recall: first, Johnson County; second, James D. Adams; and third, Pikeville.

Future Problem Solving: first, Johnson County; second, South Floyd Elementary; and third, James D. Adams.

Mathematics: first, Bryce Ferguson, Johnson County; second, Drew Justice, Johns Creek; third, Luke Hall, James D. Adams; fourth, Indigo Schoop-Wyatt, Johns Creek; and fifth, Coleman Howard, Pikeville.

Science: first, Ally Hamilton, James D. Adams; second, Elijah Pelton, Johnson County; third, Bryce Ferguson, Johnson County; fourth, Erickson Mills, Martin County; and fifth, Pikeville.

Social Studies: first (tie), Trent Cox, Johnson County, and Drew Justice, Johns Creek; third, Conner Little, John M. Stumbo Elementary; and fourth (tie), Elijah Pelton, Johnson County, and Collin Mills, Martin County.

Language Arts: first, Alexandria Hamilton, Betsy Layne Elementary; second, Kiley Hall, Johnson County; third, Adara Campbell, Johnson County; fourth, Russell Maynard, Martin County; and fifth (tie), Ethan Walls and Sara Brown, both of James D. Adams.

Arts and Humanities: first, Brock Horne, Paintsville High School; second, Sara Springer, James D. Adams; third, Trent Cox, Johnson County; fourth, Suzy Kretzer, Johnson County; and fifth, Amelia Gilbert, James D. Adams.

Composition: first, Braley Howard, Johnson County; second, Ava Hamilton; third (tie), Ilana Estep, Johnson County, and Paisley Akers, James D. Adams; and fifth, Suzy Kretzer, Johnson County, and Sara Brown, James D. Adams.
