Tigers upend Floyd Central 21-14

EASTERN — Visiting Paintsville held on to defeat Floyd Central 21-14 in a high school football season opener on Friday, Aug. 19.

Senior running back Harris Phelps led Paintsville to the win, rushing for 165 yards and three touchdowns.

Paintsville scored first and never trailed. The Tigers led 14-0 before Floyd Central answered. Paintsville packed a 14-0 lead into halftime.

Floyd Central scored late in the third quarter but Paintsville managed to hold off the host team.

Senior quarterback Max Martin led Floyd Central, completing 11 of 16 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Martin threw one interception in the season opener.

On the ground, Floyd Central rushed 29 times for 92 yards. Blake Adams paced Floyd Central on the ground, rushing seven times for 37 yards. Ranking as the Jaguars’ second-leading rusher, Martin rushed 10 times for 32 yards.

Petersen and Adams each hauled in one touchdown pass reception for the Jaguars.

Paintsville is scheduled to host reigning two-time Class 2A champion Beechwood on Friday, Aug. 26. Kickoff for the Paintsville-Beechwood football game is set for 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Field.
