Tigers top Betsy Layne in opener 70-63

BETSY LAYNE — Paintsville persevered on the road in its season opener, topping 15th Region boys' basketball rival Betsy Layne 70-63 at Junior Newsome Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
The Tigers and Bobcats are familiar 15th Region foes.
Paintsville shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the field. The Tigers were 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from 3-point range.
Paintsville shot 81.2 percent from the free throw line.
The Tigers excelled inside. Paintsville outrebounded Betsy Layne 35-21.
Colby Fugate poured in a game-high 29 points to lead Paintsville to the win. Fugate was 8-of-15 from inside the arc.
Braxton Tharp added a double-double for the Tigers. Tharp scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in Paintsville's win.
Accompanying Fugate and Tharp in double figures in scoring for the Tigers, Jaxon Watts netted 10 points.
Paintsville halted multiple Betsy Layne runs in each half during the boys' high school basketball season opener.
Betsy Layne shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field. The Bobcats were 7-of-23 (30.4 percent) from 3-point range.
Betsy Layne shot 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the free throw line.
Chase Mims and Brady Robinson paced Betsy Layne, scoring 18 points apiece.
Joining Mims and Robinson in double figures in scoring for the Bobcats, Shawn Dee Howell and Jordan Frazier added 12 points apiece.
Mims recorded a double-double for Betsy Layne, grabbing 10 rebounds.
