Martin County-Leslie County gridiron matchup set

LOUISA — Martin County is scheduled to visit Leslie County for an opener in the 2021 high school football season on Friday, Aug. 20.

The Cardinals and Eagles, Class 2A rivals from neighboring districts, did not meet during the 2020 high school football season.

Following a loss to Shelby Valley in the first round of the Class 2A Playoffs, Martin County concluded the 2020 season 3-4.

Senior running back Kolby Sparks is back to lead the Cardinals. Martin County's top player in 2020, Sparks rushed 87 times for 739 yards and five touchdowns during his junior season.

After losing to Breathitt County in the second round of the Class 2A Playoffs, Leslie County exited the 2020 season 2-5.

Skill players Wyatt Gay and Bryce Pugh are poised to take on larger roles for the Eagles in the 2021 high school football season. Leslie County lost leading rusher Trent Asher and experienced quarterback Zack Parker to graduation.

In addition to Leslie County, Martin County has regular season games scheduled versus Greenup County, Fleming County, Knott County Central, Bath County, East Ridge, Shelby Valley, West Carter, Prestonsburg and East Carter.

Kickoff for the Martin County-Leslie County football game is set for 7:30 p.m..
