Martin County comes up short at Shelby Valley

ROBINSON CREEK – Visiting Martin County came up short as Shelby Valley held on to win 29-22 in the first round of the Class 2A UK Orthopaedics/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl on Friday, Nov. 20.
As a result of the loss, Martin County ended its season 3-4.
Shelby Valley rushed 28 times for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Jayden Newsome was the Wildcats' top rusher. Newsome rushed 16 times for 108 yards.
Freshman quarterback Russ Osborne followed Newsome on the ground for the Wildcats, rushing five times for 71 yards and one touchdown.
As part of the Wildcats' rushing attack, which was diverse, Jordan Little added another rushing touchdown.
Osborne, one of the top young freshmen quarterbacks in the state, completed 5 of 12 passes for 108 yards and one touchdown.
Anthony Pallota paced Shelby Valley in receiving, reeling in two receptions for 71 yards and one touchdown.
Shelby Valley scored via offense and defense. Delivering defensively, Jordan Little returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown in the Wildcats' win.
Martin County rushed 57 times for 375 yards and three touchdowns in the season-ending loss. Two Martin County running backs combined to rush for 300-plus yards.
Logan Proctor led the Cardinals offensively, rushing 20 times for 197 yards and one touchdown.
Behind Proctor, Kolby Sparks rushed 15 times for 115 yards and one touchdown.
Contributing on the ground for Martin County, Branson Smith rushed 18 times for 63 yards and one touchdown.
Randy Kinser and Keaton Meade paced Martin County defensively, registering 13 tackles apiece.
Shelby Valley is scheduled to face host West Carter in the second round of the Class 2A UK Orthopaedics/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl on Friday, Nov. 27.
