Lawrence County repeats as 58th District champion

BETSY LAYNE — Lawrence County has captured back-to-back 58th District girls' basketball championships.
The Lady Bulldogs pulled away to beat number one seed Floyd Central 72-58 in the 58th District Girls' Basketball Tournament title game at Betsy Layne High School (Junior Newsome Arena) on Friday, March 19.
After claiming the win, Lawrence County improved to 18-10.
Floyd Central dropped to 17-5 following the loss.
Lawrence County shot 44 percent (22-of-50) from the field in the win. The Lady Bulldogs were 4-of-12 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range.
Lawrence County shot 85.7 percent (24-of-28) from the free throw line.
Kensley Feltner led Lawrence County with a game-high double-double, scoring 47 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Feltner was 17-of-18 from the free throw line.
Adding a double-double of her own for Lawrence County, Kaison Ward scored 10 points and hauled down 11 rebounds.
Lawrence County notched its eighth win in nine games.
The Lady Bulldogs outscored Floyd Central 16-12 in the opening quarter. Lawrence County clung to a 28-27 lead at halftime but separated itself from Floyd Central in the second half.
Both Lawrence County and Floyd Central advanced to the 15th Region Girls' Basketball Tournament.
Lawrence County is scheduled to face Pike County Central in the opening round of the 15th Region Girls' Basketball Tournament at Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville on Thursday, March 25. Tip-off for the Lawrence County-Pike County Central hoops matchup is set for 8:15 p.m.

Lawrence County notched the win after shooting only 29.8 percent (17-of-57) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs were 2-of-21 from 3-point range.
Lawrence County shot 65.6 percent (21-of-32) from the free throw line.
Kensley Feltner led Lawrence County with a game-high double-double, scoring 38 points and grabbing 18 rebounds.
Nearly recording a double-double for Lawrence County, Kaison Ward added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Kim Akers aced Betsy Layne, scoring a team-high 21 points. In addition to Akers reaching double figures for the Ladycats, Katie Kidd scored 12 points and Sydney Newsome netted 11 points.
