Bulldogs finish runner-up in 58th District

BETSY LAYNE — Lawrence County finished runner-up to tournament host Betsy Layne in the 58th District.
Betsy Layne pulled away to beat Lawrence County 65-42 in the 58th District Boys' Basketball Tournament title game at Junior Newsome Arena on Thursday, March 18.
Betsy Layne shot 52.5 percent (21-of-40) from the field en route to winning the district championship. The Bobcats were 7-of-14 (50 percent) from 3-point range.
Betsy Layne shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the free throw line.
Inside, Betsy Layne outrebounded the Bulldogs 32-27.
Brady Robinson scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Bobcats. Finishing directly behind Robinson in scoring for Betsy Layne, Andrew Kidd netted 21 points. Kidd recorded a double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds.
Barley missing double figures in scoring, Chase Mims and Shawn Dee Howell added nine points apiece for the Bobcats. Finishing one shot short of a double-double, Mims pulled down 11 rebounds.
Limited offensively, Lawrence County shot 28 percent (14-of-50) from the field. The Bulldogs were 5-of-24 (20.8 percent) from 3-point range.
Lawrence County shot 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from the free throw line.
Will Lafferty led Lawrence County offensively, scoring 14 points for the Bulldogs. Finishing near a double-double for Lawrence County, Trenton Adkins added 10 points.
Narrowly missing double figures in scoring for Lawrence County, Cody Maynard finished with nine points.
Both Betsy Layne (12-8) and Lawrence County (11-10) advanced to the 15th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament.
Lawrence County 68, Prestonsburg 52
Lawrence County rolled past Prestonsburg 68-52 in the 58th District Boys' Basketball Tournament Semifinals at Junior Newsome Arena on Monday, March 15.
The Bulldogs shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field. Lawrence County was 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from 3-point range.
The Bulldogs shot 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the free throw line.
Cody Maynard scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Bulldogs.
Joining Maynard in double figures for Lawrence County, Kaden Gillispie scored 14 points and Trenton Adkins netted 12 points.
Adkins and Gillispie paced Lawrence County on the backboards, securing nine rebounds and eight rebounds, respectively.
Prestonsburg shot 36.6 percent (15-of-41) from the field. The Blackcats shot 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from 3-point range, faring better beyond the arc.
Prestonsburg shot 64 percent (16-of-25) from the free throw line.
Ryan Rose paced Prestonsburg, scoring 15 points and hauling in nine rebounds.
Grant Justice added 14 points for the Blackcats while Connor Hopkins contributed nine points and Will Gullett chipped in nine points.
