Lawrence County pulls away to beat Betsy Layne 68-55

BETSY LAYNE — Lawrence County pulled away to beat Betsy Layne 68-55 in a 58th District girls' basketball game at Junior Newsome Arena on Friday, Feb. 4.

Visiting Lawrence County forced Betsy Layne to play from behind in the district hoops matchup.

Returning to the win column following a loss to Pikeville three nights earlier, Lawrence County shot 38.4 percent (23-of-60) from the field in the district matchup. The Bulldogs hit six of 27 three-point field goal attempts.

Lawrence County, which featured three scorers in double figures, shot 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the free throw line.

Kensley Feltner netted 20 points to lead Lawrence County in scoring. Recording a double-double for the Bulldogs, Kaison Ward scored 14 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.

Along with Feltner and Ward reaching double figures for Lawrence County, Tyra Hammond added 12 points.

Finishing near double figures for Lawrence County, Sophie Adkins contributed eight points.

Lawrence County fell behind and couldn't overcome multiple deficits as Pikeville won 67-53 in a girls' high school basketball game at at the T.W. Oliver Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday, Feb. 1.

Pikeville shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) from the field in the non-district matchup. The Panthers shot 37.5 percent (nine-of-24) from three-point range.

Pikeville shot 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line and edged Lawrence County 29-28 in rebounding.

Trinity Rowe scored a game-high 31 points to lead Pikeville to the win.

Providing a double-double for Pikeville. Kyera Thornsbury, a transfer from Belfry, scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Joining Rowe and Thornsbury in double figures for the Panthers, Rylee Theiss netted 12 points.

Narrowly missing a double-double, Kensley Feltner scored 29 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. Feltner was the only Lawrence County player to reach double figures.

Following Feltner in scoring for the Bulldogs, Sophie Adkins netted nine points.

Lawrence County shot 38 percent (19-of-50) from the field in the setback. The Bulldogs shot 29.4 percent (five-of-17) from three-point range.

Lawrence County shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from three-point range.
