Lawrence County captures 2A, Section 8 title

EASTERN — Lawrence County pulled away to beat Boyd County 60-50 in the 2A, Section 8 Girls’ Basketball Tournament title game at Floyd Central High School on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Following the win, Lawrence County (12-3) advances to the 2A Girls’ Basketball State Tournament.

Lawrence County shot 39.1 percent (18 of 46) from the field in the championship-clinching win. The Lady Bulldogs hit four of 19 three-point field goal attempts.

Lawrence County shot 71.4 percent (20 of 28) from the free-throw line.

Kensley Feltner poured in 33 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Lawrence County to the win. Feltner finished 10 of 14 from both inside the arc and the free throw line.

Providing another double-double for Lawrence County, Sophie Adkins scored 14 points and claimed 10 rebounds.

Finishing outside of double figures, Abby Nelson (seven points), Leandra Curnutte (four points) and Kaison Ward (two points) accounted for the rest of Lawrence County’s individual scoring.

Following its sectional victory, Lawrence County is scheduled to meet Rowan County in the 2A Girls’ Basketball State Tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Friday, Jan. 13.

Magoffin County 38

Lawrence County pulled away to defeat Magoffin County 81-38 in the 2A, Section 8 Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Thursday, Jan. 5.

The Lady Bulldogs shot 54.5 percent (30 of 55) from the field. Lawrence County shot 33.3 percent (nine of 27) from three-point range.

The Lady Bulldogs shot 75 percent (12 of 16) from the free-throw line.

Kensley Feltner scored 23 points to lead Lawrence County to the win. Along with Feltner reaching double figures for Lawrence County, Sophie Adkins scored 12 points and Abby Nelson netted 10 points.

A dozen different players scored for Lawrence County in the win.

Leandra Curnutte (eight points), Jada Patton (six points), Addison Bloomfield (five points), Emalynn Kitts (three points), Emmallee Holt (three points), Kaison Ward (three points), Madison Artrip (three points), Caroline See (three points) and Abby Maynard (two points) provided Lawrence County’s other scoring.

Magoffin County shot 45.5 percent (15 of 33) from the field while missing on seven three-point attempts.

The Lady Hornets shot 53.3 percent (eight of 15) from the free throw line.

Karah Lafferty and Angel Mullis scored 14 points apiece to pace Magoffin County in the tournament game.

The other scorers for Magoffin County were Jaylee Reed (four points), Abby Barnett (four points) and Abigail Bradley (two points).
