LOUISA — Fresh off winning the 58th District girls' basketball championship, Lawrence County is slated to compete in the Carolina Invitational Dec. 28-30. The Carolina Invitational will be held in Charleston, S.C., and feature girls' high school basketball teams from multiple states. The Lady Bulldogs, under the guidance of head coach Melinda Feltner, excelled throughout the 2019-20 girls' high school basketball season. Lawrence County guard Kensley Feltner emerged as one of the state's top scorers during the 2019-20 girls' high school basketball season, averaging 22.1 points per game for the Lady Bulldogs. In 33 games, Feltner netted 728 points. Feltner paced Lawrence County in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 9.1 rebounds per game. The Lawrence County freshman grabbed 300 rebounds in 33 games. Feltner led Lawrence County to the 58th District championship and an appearance in the 15th Region Girls' Basketball Tournament, which was held at Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville. Finishing one victory short of 20 wins, Lawrence County compiled a 19-14 overall record in the 2019-20 girls' high school basketball season. Another guard, Brooke Neal, averaged 8.1 points per game for the Lady Bulldogs, ranking third in scoring. Both Feltner and Neal are headed into sophomore seasons. Center Kaison Ward, who averaged 4.6 points per game, ranked as Lawrence County's second-leading rebounder. Headed into her freshman season, Ward averaged 7.1 rebounds per game as an eighth grader. The productive Ward is among the area's top girls' basketball players in the Class of 2024. Senior-to-be Ellie Webb averaged 3.4 points per game for Lawrence County during the 2019-20 season. As a team, Lawrence County shot 39.7 percent from the field. The Lady Bulldogs shot 29.7 percent from 3-point range. Lawrence County shot 65.2 percent from the free throw line. Inside, Lawrence County averaged 32.9 rebounds per game.
The Lady Bulldogs are due to open preseason practice in mid-October.
