Johnson Central girls defeat Magoffin County in district tournament opener

SALYERSVILLE — Johnson Central pulled away to defeat Magoffin County 67-24 in the 57th District girls' basketball tournament semifinals on Sunday.

Both Johnson Central and Magoffin County are multi-time 15th Region girls' basketball champions.

The win in the latest meeting between the two prep hoops teams allowed Johnson Central to advance to the 57th District Girls' Basketball Tournament title game at Magoffin County High School.

Johnson Central improved to 19-4 after notching the win.

Magoffin County ended its season 5-22 as a result of the loss.

Johnson Central shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the field. The Lady Eagles were 13-of-28 (46.4 percent) from 3-point range.

Johnson Central shot 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the free throw line.

Sammi Sites scored a game-high 20 points to lead Johnson Central to the win. Sites was 5-of-8 from 3-point range.

Joining Sites in double figures in scoring for Johnson Central, Clara Blair added 11 points and Kelci Blair contributed 10 points.

Defensively, Johnson Central limited 57th District Girls' Basketball Tournament host Magoffin County throughout the matchup.

Angle Mullis scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Magoffin County. Mullis was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in scoring.

Following Mullis, Kara Risner (five points), Haley Barnett (four points), Karah Lafferty (three points) and Stephanie Helton (two points) provided the additional scoring for Magoffin County in the season-ending loss.

Magoffin County exited the 2020-21 girls' high school basketball season on a six-game losing skid.
