James signs with Rick Pitino-coached Iona

INEZ — Martin County senior center Trey James made his college choice official on Friday, signing with the Rick Pitino-coached Iona College men's college basketball program.

James was named a Second Team All-State selection following the conclusion of the 2019-20 boys' high school basketball season. The Herald-Leader honored James as an Second Team All-State selection.

James helped to lead Martin County to the 2019-20 15th Region boys' basketball title in March. Through 34 games for the Cardinals in the 2019-20 boys' high school basketball season, James averaged a double-double of 14.8 points and 11.1 rebounds.

James drew recruiting interest from several men's college basketball programs. Earlier in his high school career, James was committed to Wake Forest University.

Pitino replaced Tim Cluess as the head coach of the Iona College men's basketball program. The Gaels concluded the 2019-20 men's college basketball season 12-17 overall and 9-11 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

A three-star bigman from Inez, James is set to lead reigning 15th Region champion Martin County in the 2020-21 boys' high school basketball season.
