Golden Eagles notch back-to-back wins over Newport, Clay County

BELFRY — Johnson Central notched back-to-back wins in the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry High School, Tuesday, Dec. 28-Wednesday, Dec. 29, defeating Newport and Clay County.
Johnson Central 55, Newport 46
The Golden Eagles topped Newport 55-46 in the opening round of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry High School on Tuesday, Dec. 28.
Johnson Central connected on 18 of 49 attempts from the field. The Golden Eagles were only one-of-17 from three-point range but overcame the beyond the arc shooting performance.
Johnson Central shot 66.7 percent (18-of-27) from the free throw line.
Ryan Rose led Johnson Central with a double-double, scoring 17 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Accompanying Rose in double figures for the Golden Eagles, Ryleh McKenzie scored 14 points and Grant Rice netted 12 points.
Johnson Central 70, Clay County 43
Johnson Central pulled away to beat Clay County 70-43 in the second round of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry High School on Wednesday, Dec. 29.
The 2021-22 15th Region runner-up, Johnson Central shot 40.6 percent from the field. The Golden Eagles hit six of 26 three-point field goals.
Johnson Central knocked down eight of 17 free throw attempts.
Ryan Rose led Johnson Central with a double-double, scoring 15 points and hauling down 13 rebounds.
Joining Rose in double figures in scoring for the Golden Eagles, Ryleh McKenzie netted 14 points and Grant Rice added 12 points.
