PIKEVILLE — Martin County pulled away to beat Betsy Layne 94-72 in the semifinals of the 15th Region All “A” Classic at Appalachian Wireless Arena on Thursday, Jan. 18.

The Cardinals outscored the Bobcats 15-9 in the opening quarter.

Maintaining a lead at the conclusion of each quarter, Martin County led 37-31 at halftime.

Stretching its lead, Martin County outscored Betsy Laune 15-18 in the third period.

Excelling throughout the second half, Martin County outscored Betsy Layne 32-23 in the final quarter.

Thriving offensively, Martin County shot 61.3 percent (38-of-62) from the field. The Cardinals shot 47.1 percent (eight-of-17) from three-point range.

Martin County shot 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the free throw line.

Brayden McKenzie scored 28 points to lead Martin County to the win. McKenzie paced a group of four Martin County scorers in double figures.

Accompanying McKenzie in double figures for Martin County, Luke Hale scored 22 points, Jacob Sturgill netted 17 points and Peyton Davis added 12 points.

Finishing outside double figures, Devan Maynard (six points), Bryson Dials (five points) and Blake Maynard (four points) accounted for Martin County’s additional scoring.

Andrew Kidd paced Betsy Layne with a game-high double-double, scoring 32 points and claiming 12 rebounds.

Along with Kidd reaching double figures for Betsy Layne, Tanner Hall scored 13 points.

Chipping in offensively, Carter Parsons (seven points), Braydon Hall (six points), Cameron Pente (five points), Tanner Martin (four points), and Isaiah Allen (two points) provided Betsy Layne’s other scoring.
