Cardinals upend Golden Eagles

PAINTSVILLE — Martin County held on to defeat Johnson Central 80-76 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Friday, Jan. 30.
The Cardinals moved to 13-6 overall and 3-0 in the 57th District after registering the win.
The Golden Eagles slipped to 13-4 overall and 2-1 in the 57th District after suffering the loss.
Martin County shot 56.9 percent (29-of-51) from the field. The Cardinals shot 45.0 percent (nine-of-20) from three-point range.
Martin County shot 92.9 percent (13-of-14) from the free throw line.
Braxton Keathley led Martin County with a double-double. Keathley scored 25 points and claimed 10 rebounds for the Cardinals.
Accompanying Keathley in double figures for Martin County, Bryson Dials scored 19 points, Devan Maynard netted 15 points and Eli Mills tallied 10 points.
Chipping in offensively for Martin County, Brayden Marcum added seven points while Alan Moore contributed four points.
Johnson Central shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field. The Golden Eagles shot 30.0 percent (nine-of-30) from three-point range.
Johnson Central shot 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the free throw line.
Austin Slone poured in a game-high 34 points for the Golden Eagles. Slone made 14 of 17 free throw attempts.
Joining Slone in double figures for Johnson Central, Cooper Blair scored 12 points, and Mason McKenzie netted 10 points.
Finishing in single digits, Brayden Shepherd (seven points), Ethan Cole (six points), Kyle Rose (four points) and Andrew Collins (three points) supplied the rest of Johnson Central’s scoring.
