Cardinals knock off Tigers

PAINTSVILLE — Martin County used a hot-shooting performance to top host Paintsville 85-77 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

The Cardinals shot 56.7 percent (34-of-60) from the field. Martin County shot 30.0 percent (six-of-20) from three-point range.

The Cardinals shot 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the free throw line.

Braxton Keathley scored a team-high 39 points for the Cardinals. Keathley is among the top boys’ high school basketball scorers in the state.

Following Keathley’s team-high scoring effort for Martin County, Bryson Dials netted 26 points.

Finishing outside double figures for Martin County, Devan Maynard and Brayden Marcum added seven points apiece while Eli Mills contributed six points.

Paintsville shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field. The Tigers shot 31.8 percent (seven-of-22) from three-point range.

Paintsville shot 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the free throw line.

Brock Woods led Paintsville with a game-high double-double. Woods scored 43 points and hauled in 14 rebounds for the Tigers.

Anderson Lauffer also reached double figures for Paintsville, scoring 15 points.

Following Lauffer, Preston Slone (six points), Graham Shutts (five points), Colton Short (four points), Andrew Meeks (three points) and Kruz Howell (one point) were the other scorers for the Tigers.
