Cardinals knock off Shelby Valley

ROBINSON CREEK — Martin County defeated Shelby Valley 32-22 in the second round of the KHSAA Class 2A Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 15.

Winning on the road, Martin County improved to 9-3. With the win, Martin County advanced to the quarterfinals of the KHSAA Class 2A Playoffs.

Martin County rushed 54 times for 30 yards and one touchdown. Julian Stafford led Martin County on the ground, rushing 19 times for 161 yards and two touchdowns.

Following Stafford in rushing Martin County’s rushing attack, Parker Watts took 17 carries for 78 yards.

Quarterback Devan Maynard contributed to Martin County’s win. Through the air, Maynard completed a 30-yard touchdown pass. On the ground, Maynard added a rushing touchdown.

Finding the endzone via the air, Jerrod Haney was on the receiving end of Maynard’s scoring pass.

Defensively for Martin County, Maynard recorded an interception.

In the other games played during the second round of the KHSAA Class 2A Playoffs it was Owensboro Catholic 49, Murray 14; Monroe County 42, Washington County 28; Mayfield 48, Caldwell County 21; Lexington Christian 42, WEB DuBois 6; Beechwood 56, Breathitt County 28; Prestonsburg 29, Betsy Layne 0 and Somerset 28, Bracken County 14.

Martin County will visit Beechwood for the quarterfinals of the KHSAA Class 2A Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 22. Kickoff for the Martin County-Beechwood game is set for 7 p.m.
