Cardinals fall to Frederick Douglass in state tournament

LEXINGTON — Martin County couldn’t overcome a slow start as Frederick Douglass won 73-53 in the opening round of the Boys’ Sweet 16 State Basketball Tournament at Rupp Arena Thursday.

Frederick Douglass outscored Martin County 15-9 in the first quarter.

Extending its lead, Frederick Douglass used a 30-11 scoring advantage in the second quarter to lead 45-20 at halftime.

Maintaining its momentum after the break, Frederick Douglass remained in control throughout the second half.

The Broncos led 61-37 at the end of the third quarter.

Aveion Chenault scored 18 points to lead Frederick Douglass to the win over the Cardinals. Joining Chenault in double figures for Frederick Douglass, Armelo Boone scored 16 points and Logan Busson netted 15 points.

Busson recorded a double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds for the Broncos.

Narrowly missing double figures for Frederick Douglass, Tylon Webb tossed in nine points.

Contributing offensively, Terry Cayson (four points), Jack Ngog (two points) and Christopher Wright (two points) provided the Broncos’ additional scoring.

Brayden McKenzie scored 11 points to lead the Cardinals. McKenzie was the only Martin County player to reach double figures in scoring.

Narrowly missing double figures for the Cardinals, Luke Hale and Devan Maynard netted nine points apiece.

The other scorers for Martin County in the state tournament game were Jacob Sturgell (seven points), Dray Duff (seven points), Matthew Linville (four points), Blake Maynard (four points), Peyton Davis (one point) and Ethan Ferrell (one point).

Following the loss, Martin County ended its 2022-23 season 24-11.
