Cardinals defeat Betsy Layne 35-6

INEZ — Martin County pulled away to defeat visiting Betsy Layne 35-6 in the second round of the KHSAA Class 2A State Football Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 10.

The Cardinals scored first and never trailed.

Martin County led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Holding on to a slim advantage midway through the postseason matchup, Martin County led 7-6 at halftime.

But Martin County added to its advantage and led 21-6 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Martin County rushed 38 times for 352 yards and four touchdowns. Leading Martin County to the win, Brock Messer rushed 13 times for 204 yards and two touchdowns.

Finishing as Martin County’s second-leading rusher, Aiden Horn rushed 15 times for 91 yards and one touchdown.

Contributing to Martin County’s offensive effort as a rusher, Madden Miller rushed three times for 32 yards and one touchdown.

Damian Cheek recorded a game-high 15 tackles for the Cardinals. Finishing directly behind Cheek, Miller posted 14 tackles for Class 2A, District 7 champion Martin County.

Martin County is scheduled to visit Beechwood in the third round of the KHSAA Class 2A State Football Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 17.
