Bulldogs to face Pike County Central in 2A opener

LOUISA - Lawrence County is scheduled to face former district rival Pike County Central in the opening round of the 2A Boys' Basketball Championships on January 4, 2021. The Bulldogs claimed a 2A sectional title in January. Lawrence County fell to Bourbon County in the 2A State Championship Tournament at The Sportscenter in Owensboro on January 16. The Bulldogs' 2020-21 schedule is taking shape. Lawrence County is the defending 58th District boys' basketball champion. After capturing the 2019-20 58th District boys' basketball title, Lawrence County finished runner-up in the 15th Region. Martin County held on to beat the Bulldogs 65-61 in the 2019-20 15th Region boys' basketball title game at Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville. Prior to falling to former 57th District nemesis Martin County in the 15th Region title matchup, Lawrence County topped Paintsville and Shelby Valley. The Bulldogs, under the direction of head coach Chandler Thompson, compiled a 22-12 record in the 2019-20 boys' high school basketball season. Juniors Cody Maynard (15.7 ppg) and Trenton Adkins (10.9 ppg, 7.2 rpg) are poised to lead the Bulldogs. Lawrence County, a former 15th Region champion, lost leading scorer and second-leading rebounder Tyler Maynard (20.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg) to graduation. First-year head coach Robert Amis is preparing to guide Pike County Central in the 2020-21 boys' high school basketball season. Amis replaced Ryan Whitaker on the Hawks' bench. Prior to making to move to Pike County Central, Amis guided 16th Region member Greenup County. Pike County Central concluded the 2019-20 boys' high school season 8-21. The Bulldogs and Hawks did not meet during the 2019-20 season.
Lawrence County is slated to open preseason practice in mid-October.
