Bulldogs lose district showdown to Belfry

BELFRY — After opening the season 0-5, Belfry notched its third straight win on Friday, Oct. 15, beating visiting Lawrence County 42-13 in a Class 3A, District 8 showdown.
Both Belfry and Lawrence County entered the game with an unblemished district record.
Following the loss, Lawrence County dropped to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in Class 3A, District 8.
Lawrence County scored first in the Class 3A, District 8 matchup, but faltered. Belfry doubled up the Bulldogs 14-7 in the opening quarter. The Pirates led 28-13 at halftime and led Lawrence County scoreless after the break.
Belfry controlled the second half, blanking Lawrence County 14-0 to set the final score.
Isaac Dixon led Belfry to the win, rushing 20 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns.
Behind Dixon, Dre Young rushed for 57 yards and two touchdowns for the Pirates.
Dylan Ferguson rushed for both of the Bulldogs' touchdowns in the setback. However, Belfry's defensive unit held Ferguson to 21 yards on 12 rush attempts
Quarterback Alex Strickland led Lawrence County, completing 10 of 18 passes for 136 yards. Leading Lawrence County in passing and rushing, Strickland rushed six times for 49 yards.
Douglas Hall ranked second in rushing for the Bulldogs. Hall rushed eight times for 43 yards.
Kaden Gillispie paced Lawrence County in receiving, reeling in six receptions for 97 yards.
Lawrence County is scheduled to host Floyd Central for a Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 22.
