Bulldogs drop district battle to Pirates

BELFRY — Lawrence County came up short as Belfry held on to win 14-6 in a Class 3A, District 8 game at Haywood Stadium on Friday, Sept. 29.

Following the loss, Lawrence County dropped to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Class 3A, District 8.

Belfry improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in Class 3A, District 8, after posting the win.

The Pirates scored first and never trailed. Following a scoreless first quarter, Belfry reached the endzone twice during the second period to lead 14-0 at halftime.

Belfry maintained its 14-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Dre Young delivered a 20-yard touchdown run for the Pirates. Extending Belfry’s lead, quarterback Chase Varney connected with Caden Woolum on a 47-yard touchdown pass.

Lawrence County produced its only points in the fourth quarter when Cody Crum reached the endzone on a four-yard touchdown run. Crum paced Lawrence County on the ground, finishing with 43 rushing yards.

Following Crum, Will McDavid added 36 rushing yards for the Bulldogs.

Through the air for Lawrence County, quarterback Talan Pollock completed seven passes for 60 yards.

Carlo Chicko hauled in four receptions for 41 yards to rank as Lawrence County’s leading receiver.

Defensively for Lawrence County, Cody Crum recorded an interception and Ty Brooks supplied a fumble recovery.

Lawrence County is scheduled to host Magoffin County for another Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 6, games begins at 7:30 p.m.
