Adkins leads Lawrence County to win over Hazard

MOUNT STERLING — Sophie Adkins scored 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Lawrence County over Hazard 58-53 in the Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County High School on Thursday, Dec. 21.

Lawrence County shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the field. Defending 15th Region champion Lawrence County shot 33.3 percent (six-of-18) from three-point range in its win.

Lawrence County shot 57.1 percent (four-of-seven) from the free throw line.

Along with Adkins’ double-double in Lawrence County’s victory, Kaison Ward netted 11 points and Jada Patton scored 10 points.

Contributing to the win, Leandra Curnutte (eight points), Abby Maynard (five points) and Abby Nelson (two points) accounted for the rest of Lawrence County’s scoring.

Hazard shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field. Struggling beyond the arc, Hazard made only two of 16 three-point field goal attempts.

Hazard shot 46.7 percent (seven-of-15) from the free throw line.

Laura Everidge and Hannah Caudill scored 16 points apiece to lead Hazard in the matchup.

Following two of her teammates in double figures for Hazard, Maddi Frohnapfel netted 13 points.

Rounding out Hazard’s scoring, Heidi Bentley, who finished one shot short of reaching double figures, tossed in eight points.

Nicholas County 63, Lawrence County 62: Lawrence County come up short as Nicholas County held on to win 63-62 in the Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County High School on Wednesday, Dec. 20.

Nicholas County shot 51 percent (26-of-51) from the field. The Lady Jackets made four of 10 three-point field goal attempts, shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc.

Nicholas County shot 70 percent (seven of 10) from the free throw line.

Maggie Simons scored a game-high 30 points to lead Nicholas County to the win.

Joining Simons in double figures for Nicolas County, Tessa Humphries scored 12 points and Nevaeh Davis netted 11 points.

Aiding in the win, Mady Adams (six points), Sydney Carpenter (two points) and Caroline Banks (two points) supplied Nicholas County’s other scoring.

Lawrence County shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs made three of 13 three-point field goal attempts.

Lawrence County shot 69.2 percent (nine-of-13) from the free throw line.

Nearly recording a double-double, Sophie Adkins scored 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Lawrence County.

Four different players reached double figures for Lawrence County in the loss. Along with Adkins reaching double figures for Lawrence County, Kaison Ward and Leandra Curnutte scored 12 points apiece while Jada Patton added 10 points.

Finishing in single digits, Abby Nelson (four points) and Abby Maynard (one point) provided Lawrence County’s additional scoring.
