UK King’s Daughters unveiling new 3D mobile mammography unit in Ashland

ASHLAND — UK King’s Daughters will unveil a new $1.1 million 3D mobile mammography unit on Wednesday, Jan. 31. The unveiling ceremony will take place 4 to 6 p.m. at the King’s Daughters Pavilion, 2000 Ashland Drive, Russell.

The mobile unit features a new, state-of-the-art 3D mammography system and replaces the current unit—a 2008 model with more than 241,000 miles. Tours of the new unit will be available at the event.

“Our previous mobile unit served us well,” said King’s Daughters President/CEO Sara Marks. “This new unit will allow us to provide even more of these life-saving screenings to women throughout eastern Kentucky and southern Ohio.”

More than 2,500 screening mammograms were performed onboard the mobile mammography unit in 2023. Most of these screenings took place in rural areas.

“Access to mammography services can be difficult in rural communities. Our mobile unit allows us to reach this population and help detect breast cancer early,” said Marks. “One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, so early detection is key.”

The existing mobile unit, that is also equipped with a 3D mammography system, will continue to serve women in rural areas at a new semi-permanent location in Prestonsburg. The project is made possible through a grant in collaboration with the Kentucky Women’s Cancer Screening Program, which supports early detection of breast cancer, targeting underserved Appalachian women in eastern Kentucky.
