Two Children Die in a House Fire in Martin County

INEZ —Two children, a one-year-old boy, Jason Lee Mollette and a four-year-old boy, Greyson Marcum, died in a house fire Friday, at a home located on Tug River Road in Inez and the grandmother, Vera Hammond, 66, was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

“A six-year-old who was also in the home, woke up screaming for his grandmother saying the house was on fire,” Martin County Coroner Chris Todd said. “The six-year-old ran next door to call 911.”

Todd explained that he had taken both boys to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

“The four-year-old was laying in the floor of the house about seven feet from the back door,” Todd said. “The one-year-old was deceased in the back of the ambulance.”

Investigators were dispatched to the house fire and a preliminary investigation revealed that emergency personnel located two juveniles deceased inside the residence a release from the Kentucky State Police said.

The obituary for Greyson Marcum said he and his brother, Jason Mollette perished in the fire while visiting their grandmother. They are survived by brothers Hunter Marcum and Brilynn Flannery; Aunts, Alyssa Fletcher of Louisa and Brianna Moore of Pentress, W.Va.; Uncle, Derek Maggard of Sandy Hook; Great Uncle Larry Delong and Great Aunt Justina Keathley of Richmond as well as a host of other family and friends.

Greyson attended HeadStart at Eden Elementary School and was well loved by everyone who knew him. Greyson will be remembered for his sweet smile and big hugs. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 7, at 1 p.m. in the chapel at Crum Funeral Home with Nathan Harless officiating. Burial will follow at the Moore Cemetery in Tomahawk. Arrangements are under the direction of Crum Funeral Home of Inez.

The cause of the fire and death is under investigation. No foul play is suspected, the release said.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by KSP Detective Joseph Coleman, who was assisted on scene by Kentucky State Police Post 9 personnel, Inez Volunteer Fire Department, Turkey Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Warfield Volunteer Fire Department and Patriot Ambulance Service.

Todd also said that his office along with the KSP and Kentucky Fire Marshal’s office are also investigating.
