LOUISA — Lawrence County’s idol, Noah Thompson, got the best birthday gift ever as he made it to the top 10 Monday night on “American Idol.”
“Thank y’all so much for voting for me. I am so excited for this journey to keep going! Best birthday ever,” Thompson, who turned 20 on Monday, said on his Facebook page.
After naming the top 10, based on their performances, the judges selected four others to remain in the competition, bringing the total to 14.
On Sunday, during a three-hour episode, Thompson performed “Falling” by Harry Styles, and the judges gave him a standing ovation, and he made it to the top 20.
Judge Lionel Richie told Thompson he thought he was “a little shy,” but reminded him that he didn’t need to be.
“You have made it,” Richie said.
Katie Perry said, “It’s Easter Sunday, and he has risen. You are a great human being, humble and beautiful. You miss your baby, and I miss my baby. You have opened the door. You just gotta walk through it.”
Luke Bryan said, “You’re going to ‘awe shucks’ your way to the top.”
After being selected Monday by America to go into the top 10, Thompson played his guitar and sang “Cover Me Up” by Jason Isbell.
When asked how he felt, Thompson said, “I’m at a loss for words, I’m just grateful.”
On Tuesday, the Lawrence County Fiscal Court approved a resolution during its regular meeting proclaiming April as Noah Thompson Appreciation Month.
“During his time on ‘American Idol,’ Noah Thompson has not only just shown his ability as a singer, he has been a shining light on Lawrence County with his character,” the proclamation says. “Noah Thompson represents Lawrence County with a sincere politeness and humbleness that speaks volumes to the rest of America. Congratulations on making it to the final 14. You make Lawrence County Proud.”
The next “American Idol” episode is Sunday on ABC.
