A long-time physician who served the community in many capacities passed away on Monday, Aug. 5.

Dr. Lloyd Browning, 86, was born July 30, 1938, in Viper. After high school he attended Berea College and the University of Louisville Medical College. Upon graduation, he served his internship in Memphis, Tenn. (1964-65) and on the Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala.

While studying at Berea College, Dr. Browning met Marcella Chambers, the woman he would marry and spend the next 62 years of his life with.

Together they raised two children, Melissa Browning Kowal and Dr. Ben Browning, who both married and made them loving grandparents of a total of five grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Jessie Murray and Atha Stigall.

Many people took to social media after Dr. Browning’s passing with condolences, fond memories and prayers for the families. Dr. Browning worked alongside Dr. Norman Edwards and Dr. Mark Kingston at Riverview Medical Clinic.

Dr. Browning was also a devoted member of the Lawrence County Board of Health serving as Chairman for more than two decades and Medical Director for the Health Department.

“There has never been anyone who loved and caring for people any more than Dr. Browning,” said former pediatric nurse Lawrence Vinson. “He taught and inspired with his words and his actions. He used to say nothing matters more than listening to your patient. He loved Jesus and embodied gentle kindness. He provided wise counsel and spoke firm truth. He has impacted so many people, so many families in this community.”

A Celebration of Life ceremony was held Aug. 9 at the Hilltop Methodist Church, where Dr. Browning was a devoted member. Burial was in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Louisa.
