ULYSSES - Quilter’s Playhouse offers classes and quilting supplies to Lawrence County and the surrounding area.

Shery Burchett and family opened the quilt shop in November 2020.

“It was a rough start,” Burchett said, “but we were blessed to stay open.”

The shop, located at 51 Beasley Branch Road in Ulysses, is a family affair. Everyone pitches in to create paintings, make T-shirts, do long arm quilting, and digitize embroidery patterns. With a brilliant family atmosphere, the store brims with laughter, learning and creativity.

Quilting was once a required activity of every household. For a time, it seemed to lose popularity and many people stopped practicing the art. Now we are seeing a renewed interest in the art. New row-by-row patterns, more intricate designs, and increased acceptance of machine quilting have attracted more people to quilting.

“Not only is quilting an artistic expression, but also a statement about our hearts,” Burchett said. “Even though we quilt a lot with machines, we continue the hand stitch tradition of every stitch is sewn with love.”

The store offers quilting classes for everyone – from the beginner to the experienced quilter wanting to learn a new skill. Classes are small and interactive with four to 12 students. They frequently stick around after class to work on their quilts and help one another.

Burchett offers classes for both hand and machine quilting. You can also purchase classes for gifts through the store’s gift card program. Quilter’s Playhouse and Gran Gran’s Quilting and Embroidery are co-hosting a day-long quilting retreat on Nov. 12.

Quilter’s Playhouse has a large selection of fabrics and what-nots for the quilter. A customer reported, “Sherry has the best selection of fabric around in terms of variety and material.” With the recent downsizing of fabric departments in local big box stores, the selection is welcome. Also, the shop does repairs on sewing machines.

“When you have been using them as long as I have, you learn a few tricks,” Burchett laughed.
