INEZ —Students at Martin County High School held a protest Thursday and demanded change and that something be done about a bullying incident involving a female student who was manipulated into chugging milk and eating bananas until she was sick.

“Heather doesn’t understand that these girls aren’t laughing with her, they are laughing at her,” sophomore Kadence Hale said in an interview with WYMT.

Students said videos and photos had been circulated on social media and that there was also an incident involving a boy with special needs in the locker room.

Several students said that they had told school officials about their concerns but that nothing was done about it, because of their social standing.

Martin County School Superintendent Larry James issued a statement on the incident Friday. He said the “incident has been reported and is currently under investigation.”

“The Martin County School District has a zero-tolerance policy on bullying, which includes anti-bullying and sensitivity programs,” James said in the statement. “We strive to provide a safe learning environment for all our students.”
