Lawrence man fatally shot following burglary, police say

Green Ramey, 42, of Lawrence County, is charged with second-degree burglary in connection with an incident in which another man was fatally shot.

PEACH ORCHARD — A Lawrence County man, Jerry Lee Maynard, 45, was fatally wounded at approximately 6:20 a.m. on Aug. 16, in relation to a possible burglary, according to a release issued by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the release, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Peach Orchard on reports of shots fired, possibly related to a burglary.

Upon arrival, a witness stated that one of the suspects, identified as Maynard, was located in the woods by the property owner.

Maynard then disarmed the property owner, and a fight over the gun took place, during which Maynard was fatally shot during the struggle, the release said.

Maynard was pronounced dead at the scene by Lawrence County Coroner Wesley Heston.

Upon further investigation, a warrant was obtained for a second suspect, Green Ramey, 42, also of Lawrence County, the release said.

Green was arrested without incident and charged with second-degree burglary, and lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.

The incident is still under investigation by Lawrence County Chief Deputy Mason Keefer.
