Lawrence, Johnson students headed to state Governor’s Cup

LOUISA – Middle school academic team members from Lawrence and Johnson counties are headed to state competition after winning their regional Governor’s Cups last week.

In Region 17 academic competition, Fallsburg Elementary’s middle-grades future problem solving team took first place, while Louisa Middle School students Alex DeSario and Rileigh Shannon placed fifth in individual science and composition assessments, respectively, securing a trip to the state Governor’s Cup in March.

The top three team and top five individual finishers advance to the state competition.

Louisa placed fourth and Fallsburg fifth in quick recall contests, while Blaine Elementary took seventh place.

Boyd County won the overall Region 17 Governor’s Cup, placing first in quick recall and social studies competition. Fallsburg placed fifth overall and Louisa placed eighth.

Johnson County Middle School swept the Region 22 Governor’s Cup, winning the quick recall and future problem solving team contests as well as all six individual competitions.

Region 22 results were:

Overall; first, Johnson County; second, Duff-Allen Central; third, James D. Adams; fourth, Paintsville; fifth (four-way tie), Martin County, Allen Elementary, John M. Stumbo and Betsy Layne; and ninth, South Floyd.

• Quick Recall: first, Johnson County; second, Duff-Allen Central Elementary; third, Martin County Middle School; fourth, James D. Adams Middle School; and fifth (tie), John M. Adams Elementary and Betsy Layne Elementary.

• Future Problem Solving: first, Johnson County; second, Duff-Allen Central; third, John M. Stumbo; fourth, South Floyd Elementary; fifth, James D. Adams; and sixth, Paintsville.

• Mathematics: first, Paris Short, Johnson County; second, Josie Dials, Johnson County; third, Alexandria Hamilton, Betsy Layne; fourth, Pedro Cox, Paintsville; and fifth, Luke Hall, James D. Adams.

• Science: first, Elijah Pelton, Johnson County; second, Gabe Howell, Johnson County; third, Ally Hamilton, James D. Adams; fourth, Jaycob Stambaugh, Johnson County; and fifth, Taryn Meade, Duff-Allen Central.

• Social Studies: first, Elijah Pelton, Johnson County; second, Braxton Howard, Duff-Allen Central; third, Jaycob Stambaugh, Johnson County; fourth, Ryan Price, Johnson County; and fifth, Jacob Skeens, Duff-Allen Central.

• Language Arts: first, Adara Campbell, Johnson County; second, Kiley Hall, Johnson County; third, Tori McGinnis, Johnson County; fourth, Taryn Meade, Duff-Allen Central; and fifth, Bonnie Kim, Paintsville.

• Arts and Humanities: first, Suzy Kretzer, Johnson County; second, Izabella Webb, Johnson County; third, Amelia Gilbert, James D. Adams; fourth, Serenity Stambaugh, Johnson County; and fifth, Braxton Howard, Duff-Allen Central.
