Lawrence court holds first meeting of year

LOUISA — The Lawrence County Fiscal Court had its first regular meeting for the new year Tuesday during which Judge-Executive Phillip Carter recognized and thanked everyone for the great team they had been during the previous year and all that they had accomplished.

Carter went on to say he is looking forward to another good year.

The court unanimously approved the appointment of Daniel Castle to the Big Sandy Regional Jail Authority. Carter explained that Lawrence County has chairmanship.

Three people were appointed to the Lawrence County Tourism Commission, including Christy Moore, Chris Jobe and Keith Chaffin.

The court approved the adoption of the federal mileage reimbursement with a motion from Magistrate Mike Halcomb, a second by Magistrate John Scaggs and all in favor.

The fiscal court approved the Rattlesnake Ridge Water District’s intent to enter into an interlocal cooperation agreement, with a motion from Halcomb, a second by Magistrate Rick Blackburn, and all in favor.

The court unanimously approved bidding out the HVAC maintenance at the Judicial Center and to bid out dump trucks.

Carter also talked about the previous administration waiving East Park taxes for five years, and the county attorney is going to review the situation to see if they can start collecting taxes again. No action was taken, and the issue was tabled.

Jody Moore was appointed to the position of road supervisor, with a motion from Blackburn, a second by Halcomb and all in favor.

The court approved a proclamation honoring the Lawrence County Board of Education with a motion from Halcomb, a second by Blackburn and all in favor.

Lawrence County Schools Superintendent Dr. Robbie Fletcher updated the court on some of the projects at the school as well as some of the sports teams, academic teams and JRTC.

Fletcher also thanked the county for its partnership in doing the dozer work for the new field and added that it will save the school district $60,000. Fletcher also said the county has “some excellent dozer operators.”

Before the end of the meeting, Kentucky Power External Affairs Manager Amanda Clark presented the court with a ceremonial check for $30,000, which is funded through the Kentucky Power Economic Growth Grant Program.

In other business, the court approved the state rate on cabin rentals, the minutes from the Dec. 20, 2022, meeting and the special meeting at the beginning of the year; the bills; and the treasurer’s report.
