LOUISA —After being notified that there were enough signatures on the petition to warrant a vote regarding the double-nickel tax, the Lawrence County Board of Education voted to wait until November’s election, instead of having a special election.
Lawrence County Clerk Chris Jobe said in an interview last week that there were enough qualified voters on the petition and that it would be up to the school district as to whether they wanted to hold a special election or to wait until November.
Jobe also explained that the laws have changed and if the school wanted a special election, they would be responsible for paying for it and that it could cost more than $30,000.
In an update regarding the double-nickel tax posted on the Lawrence County Schools web page, Superintendent Dr. Robbie Fletcher said the Lawrence County Board of Education voted earlier this week to wait until the November election to place the tax on the ballot.
“There will be much more information provided over the next few months,” Fletcher said. “When the election occurs, we hope that you can vote “in favor” of the tax in order to pay for many renovations that are needed in our schools, including replacing Louisa West Elementary. Thank you for any support that you can provide. Thank you for being ALL IN.”
