Friday is candidate filing deadline

LOUISA — Friday is the deadline to file for countywide and other offices that require a primary election, and several candidates have filed their papers ahead of the cutoff date.

A total of 15 candidates had filed to run for office in Lawrence, Johnson, Floyd and Martin counties as of Monday, including several seeking to hold city and school board positions, although the filing deadline for those posts isn’t until June.

Lawrence County

Twenty-one candidates have filed for offices in Lawrence County, and all are running as Republicans.

Candidates include:

• Sheriff: Chuck Jackson (incumbent)

• County Judge-Executive: Phillip L. Carter (incumbent) and D. Heath Preston.

• Jailer: Roger Lee Jordan (incumbent).

• County Clerk: Chris Jobe (incumbent).

• PVA: Chris Rose (incumbent).

• County Attorney: Brad Derifield and Johnny W. Osborne.

• County Surveyor: J. Michael Shapaka (incumbent).

• Coroner: Wesley Heston (incumbent) and Will Skaggs.

• Magistrate, District 1: Michael (Mouse) Halcomb (incumbent).

• Magistrate, District 2: John Scaggs (incumbent).

• Magistrate, District 3: David Pinson (incumbent) and Earl Boggs Jr.

• Magistrate, District 4: Rick Blackburn (incumbent).

• Constable, District 2: William “Sonny” Mynhier (incumbent), Marcus Bowen and Sam Muncy.

• Constable, District 3: Jeff McCarty.

• Constable, District 4: James “Woody” Thomas.

Johnson County

A total of 45 candidates filed for office in Johnson County, with all but two being Republicans.

The two Democrats are District 2 Constable Bruce Ritz and Jimmy Castle, who is running for constable in District 3.

The total also includes 10 people seeking non-partisan city and school board positions. The filing deadline for those offices is June 7.

City candidates include incumbent Bill Mike Runyon, Ann Ratliff and Rick Preston for mayor; and incumbents Roger “Bo” Belcher, David Vanhoose and Brandon May along with Eva Michelle Holbrook and Ashley Greiner Blanton for city council.

Filing for Johnson County Board of Education seats were incumbents Paul “P.R.” Greer in District 1 and Willard Burton in District 4.

Republican candidates for county offices include:

• County Judge-Executive: incumbent Mark McKenzie and Lyndon Butcher.

• District 1 Commissioner: Zach Branham, Jessica “Blevins” Click, Calvin Music, C. David “Davey” Williams and Vessie Lee Workman.

• District 2 Commissioner: incumbent Mike “Mikey” Jarrell, Dustin Music, Darwin Baldwin, Jamie L. Castle, Cecil Butcher and Nancy McKenzie Cantrell.

• District 3 Commissioner: incumbent Tim “Barber Tim” Salyer, Bryan S. Childers, Mike Vanhgoose and R. Becky Grace Clay.

• County Clerk: incumbent Sallee Conley Holbrook.

• County Attorney: incumbent Michael S. Endicott.

• Sheriff: incumbent Doug Saylor and Scott Hazlette.

• Jailer: incumbent Steve Rose and Dwayne D. Price.

• Coroner: incumbent J.R. Frisby.

• PVA: incumbent Michael “Dip” Stafford and James David Castle.

• Surveyor: incumbent Clarence Scarberry.

• District 1 Constable: incumbent James “Red Eye” Castle and Tim J. Branham.

• District 2 Constable: Bob “Karate Bob” Hyden and Ronnie Butcher.

• District 3 Constable: Billy Dean Howard and John Mike Stapleton.

Floyd County

Twenty-four candidates have filed in Floyd County, including three for city offices in Prestonsburg.

Candidates for those posts include incumbent Les Stapleton for mayor and incumbents Mike Lafferty and David Gearheart for city council.

Candidates for county offices include:

• County Attorney: incumbent Keith Bartley (Democrat).

• Sheriff: Mike Hall (Republican).

• Jailer: Steve Little (Democrat) and Zachary D. McCoy (Republican).

• PVA: David A. Layne II (Democrat).

• Coroner: Greg Nelson (incumbent, Democrat).

• District 1 Magistrate: Mark D. Crider (incumbent, Democrat), John T. Holland (Republican) and Clark Bradford (Republican).

• District 2 Magistrate: George Ousley (incumbent, Democrat).

• District 3 Magistrate: Mike Tackett (incumbent, Democrat).

• District 4: Ronnie Akers (incumbent, Democrat), Ivan McKinney (Republican) and William Hohenecker (Republican).

• District 1 Constable: Gary Wolfe (Republican) and Johnny S. Johnson (Republican).

• District 2 Constable: James Hoover (Democrat) and Gary Nelson (Democrat).

• District 3 Constable: Ernie Ray Moore (Democrat) and Ronald Wright (Democrat).

• District 4 Constable: Alfred “Junebug” Newsom (Democrat).

Martin County

Twenty-five candidates have filed in Martin County, and all are Republicans. They include:

• County Judge-Executive: Colby Kirk and Eric Jude.

• Sheriff: John Herman Kirk (incumbent), Walter Jackson and Gregory Spears.

• County Attorney: Melissa Fannin Phelps (incumbent).

• Coroner: Chris Todd (incumbent).

• PVA: Bobby Hale (incumbent).

• Jailer: Buddy Stacy, Paul McCoy, Joshua Hunt and William Preece.

• District 1 Magistrate: Jarrod Goforth (incumbent) and Cody Slone.

• District 2 Magistrate: Kermit Howell.

• District 3 Magistrate: Derrick Mills (incumbent) and Tracy Spence.

• District 4 Magistrate: Junior Hunt (incumbent) and Gary Cox.

• District 5 Magistrate: Mark Blackburn (incumbent) and Ronald Workman.

• District 1 Constable: Bobby Maynard.

• District 4 Constable: James Bradford Preece.
