Floyd County School District Responds to Threat at Adams Middle School

The Floyd County School District, in coordination with the Prestonsburg Police Department, is addressing an incident at Adams Middle School involving a juvenile student who is being charged with Terroristic Threatening, Second Degree.

The School Resource Officer at Adams Middle School, after a thorough investigation, determined that the juvenile had made threatening statements to other students during the school day, indicating an intent to bring a firearm to school the following day. Based on this information, the juvenile will be taken into custody by the Prestonsburg Police Department.

At no time was a firearm discovered on school property, and no students or staff were in any imminent danger during this incident.

“Our first priority is always the safety and security of our students and staff,” said Thomas Gearheart, Chief Safety Officer for the Floyd County School District. “Our SRO acted quickly and in close collaboration with school administrators to ensure the situation was under control.”

Superintendent Larry Hammond also emphasized the district’s commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment. “We take any threat to the safety of our students and schools very seriously,” Hammond said.

“While no firearm was found and no one was in immediate danger, we are following all protocols to ensure the continued security of our school community.”

The Floyd County School District will continue to work closely with law enforcement as this investigation progresses. Any further information will be shared as it becomes available.
