Dad Bod Squad puts finishing touches on playground project

LOUISA — Members of Louisa Head Start’s Dad Bod Squad gathered on Monday, Oct. 3, to put the finishing touches on the preschool’s playground revitalization.

Rubber mulch was spread, weeds were removed, kudzu was cut and rough edges were sanded down. Fathers participating included Eric Dotson, Bobby Cantrell and Austin Hughes, along with Head Start Family Advocate Ross Compton.

“We’ve got an amazing group of dads/father-figures this year,” Compton said.” Eric, Bobby and Austin were the ones able to step up this week, but there are a couple dozen others who’ve been generous in offering their time and talents. “Knowing they’re there, enthusiastic and ready to pitch in on projects like this allows us to dream bigger about the opportunities and experiences we can provide for our children and families.”

“My wife and I have four kids in four different schools in Lawrence County at the moment and I try to be involved at each of them,” Cantrell said. “This Head Start program is truly a family experience. My wife and I couldn’t be happier with the progress our youngest son has made since enrolling.”

Cantrell’s company, Cantrell’s CORE Cleaning, has done free pressure washing at each school.

The Louisa Head Start Center is part of the Northeast Community Action Agency’s Head Start network of preschool centers that serves Lawrence, Carter, Elliott and Greenup counties.

Head Start provides free early education services for 3- and 4-year-old children, as well as resources for parents and family members. Applications are accepted year-round.
