Hazard battles back, eliminates Golden Eagles

MOREHEAD — Hazard battled back from behind to beat Johnson Central 3-2 in the Semi-State 4 game at Morehead State University on Saturday, June 12.

The loss eliminated Johnson Central from the state high school baseball tournament.

Johnson Central moved ahead early, scoring one run in the bottom half of the first inning.

The Golden Eagles added another run in the bottom half of the second inning to lead 2-0.

But Hazard answered, scoring three runs in the top half of the seventh inning.

Sawyer Patrick earned the win on the mound for the Bulldogs. Patrick pitched a complete game, surrendering two runs on six hits over seven innings while registering nine strikeouts and giving up one walk.

Gavin Crum took the pitching loss for the Golden Eagles. Crum allowed three runs on three hits over one and one-third innings, striking out one.

Cameron Kelsey started the game on the mound for Johnson Central. Kelsey pitched five innings, allowing zero runs on five hits and striking out two.

Hazard outhit Johnson Central 9-6.

The Bulldogs overcame two errors to notch the win.

Hank Pelfrey led 14th Region champion Hazard at the plate, finishing 3-for-3.

Keygan Pelfrey and Ryan Sartin-Slone recorded two hits apiece for 15th Region champion Johnson Central in the season-ending loss.

Johnson Central was flawless defensively, finishing error-free in the field.
